Behan Satyawati

Born on 26 January, 1907, Satyawati Vidyalankar was not merely a freedom fighter, but also a harbinger of new kinds of politics in her times. In a span of 38 years, (1907-45), she rose to prominence in India’s freedom struggle. She was christened as Toofani Behn by Mahatma Gandhi because of her ability for instant mobilization for a cause. For her, the workers were as critical to the nationalist campaign as the middle class, the mainstay in the then battle for freedom. While highlighting her contribution to the nationalist cause, one should also not miss the fact that it was she who always encouraged the women to take part in the struggle for freedom because she believed that they as well as their male counterparts had an equal responsibility in the freedom struggle. No wonder, Aruna Asaf Ali, rightly called her ‘the Indian Joan of Arc’.
